What is the ALVMA Health Plan?

ALVMA offers three Health Plans. A traditional copay plan with BCBS of Alabama, a higher deductible BCBS of Alabama Health Plan paired with a secondary insurance option, and the BCBS of Alabama higher deductible plan as a stand-alone option. The secondary insurance is offered through OptiMed and creates maximum savings for the plan’s participants.

What is secondary insurance?

Secondary insurance pays most deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses up to the policy limit after your primary medical plan has paid its covered expenses. For the ALVMA High Plan, your secondary coverage pays a total of $5,000 toward your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, meaning you only have to pay $1,800 of your own money. To receive full benefits, be sure to give your doctor both your primary insurance card and your secondary insurance card.

Who is Eligible for the ALVMA Health Plan?

ALVMA members who are directly involved in a veterinary medicine practice are eligible for the ALVMA Health Plan. Members must have at least one common law employee to be eligible for the ALVMA Health Plan. Sole proprietors without at least one common law employee are not eligible to participate in the plan. Please contact CAC group for more information at alvma@cacgroup.com.

What if I’m already offering a small group health plan to my employees?

You may transfer to the ALVMA at your current plans renewal or at ALVMAs open enrollment period. To begin this process please reach out to CAC group at alvma@cacgroup.com. Please note that you must notify all impacted employees of this change and allow them the option to opt out. Employees who wish to change their benefit elections must do so through the Simon portal.

Could I elect Dental, without participating in the Medical Plan?

Yes. Both Dental and Medical can be elected separate of each other, or together if preferred.

Can Vision be elected as a solitary benefit?

Vision can only be elected if Medical and/or Dental is elected. It cannot be elected by itself.

When and how do I enroll?

The ALVMA Health Plan renews January 1, and our Open Enrollment is held in November each year. Open Enrollment is the one time per year we are allowed to onboard new members to the plan. If your company is an existing plan member and has a new hire, you have the ability to enroll them in the SIMON portal at alvma.simon365.com.

What if an employee who elected the benefit gets fired or quits? How is the benefit offered to new hires?

Members will be responsible for submitting adds, terminations, and changes for their employees in the Simon portal at alvma.simon365.com.

Who should I contact if I have questions?

Questions about the ALVMA Health Plan and its benefits can be directed to CAC Group at alvma@cacgroup.com.
